English at Lower Primary covers all four skills — reading, writing, listening, and speaking — in an integrated way. We go deeper where it matters: comprehension strategies, vocabulary in context, and the grammar foundations that make composition possible. Children learn to construct sentences that say what they mean, not just sentences that are grammatically correct.

Mathematics at Lower Primary is where problem-solving habits form. We build number sense, mental calculation strategies, and the four operations — always alongside the ability to read a problem, identify what it is asking, and choose the right approach. Children who understand why a method works never forget it.

At YPS, we don't explain first and practise second. We activate first — bridging from what a child already knows toward what they need to discover. Before a child encounters a new concept, their mentor connects it to something familiar. Then the child attempts — not blindly, but with their existing knowledge as the scaffold. Research conducted at Singapore's National Institute of Education shows that children who engage with a problem first develop deeper, more transferable understanding. The attempt reveals the real gap. The mentor then teaches precisely at that point.

Discuss
Understanding deepens when it is spoken aloud. Every YPS lesson is structured around purposeful discussion — mentor-led questions that invite genuine thinking, not just correct answers. In a community classroom of twenty voices, one concept gets explained twenty different ways. A child who hears a peer articulate something they could not yet say themselves experiences a breakthrough that no worksheet can produce.

MASTER
We do not move on until your child genuinely understands — not just gets it right on the day. Mastery learning, validated across more than 800 studies, shows that when children receive specific feedback and the opportunity to try again, levels of achievement once reserved for the top 20% become accessible to almost every child. At YPS, every concept is revisited, corrected, and confirmed before the next is introduced.

From 2026, MOE has moved away from the old model where identified children transferred to a separate GEP school. Children now stay in their own school. A standardised identification exercise in English and Mathematics is held at P3 Term 3 — complemented by teacher observations, daily work, and learning dispositions such as curiosity and inquisitiveness. Identification continues at P4 and P5, so the window is not just one moment.
Children identified to benefit from further stretch attend centre-based advanced modules once a week, in English, Mathematics, or Science. These modules are explicitly de-linked from PSLE — they are designed to develop thinking, not to prepare for national exams.
Identification now weighs dispositions — curiosity, inquisitiveness, how a child engages with problems — not just test scores. These are habits, and habits are built in the classroom over years.
For children preparing for P3 identification: Try · Discuss · Master builds the exact thinking profile assessors look for — naturally, through every lesson from P1.
For children already identified: the advanced modules develop deep thinking skills. YPS ensures the academic foundation is strong enough for that stretch to be meaningful.
