Upper Primary English is about precision and performance. The PSLE rewards a child's ability to comprehend complex texts, construct a compelling argument, and write with clarity and control. We prepare children systematically — building vocabulary, practising every question type, and developing the analytical voice that examiners reward. No component is treated as secondary.

At Upper Primary, the Mathematics syllabus expands significantly — fractions, ratios, percentages, speed, geometry, and algebra at P6 all demand conceptual understanding that cannot be drilled from a template. We consolidate foundations at P4, develop problem-solving fluency at P5, and focus on exam performance and metacognition at P6. Children learn to check their own reasoning — the habit that separates AL1 from AL3.

Science is the subject parents most often underestimate until P5 — when it suddenly becomes examination-critical. We begin Science at P4 with strong conceptual grounding so that by P5 and P6, children are not learning topics for the first time under pressure. We teach children to read Science questions carefully, construct structured answers using the claim-evidence-reasoning framework, and apply concepts to unfamiliar scenarios — exactly what PSLE markers reward.

At Upper Primary, the attempt takes on examination weight. Children practise under timed, exam-like conditions from the very first minute of the lesson — not to create pressure, but to build the metacognitive awareness that separates children who know the content from children who can perform when it matters most. A child who has spent two years attempting problems under comfortable conditions often discovers, too late, that the exam environment itself was the obstacle. We remove that variable early.

PSLE questions — particularly in English comprehension and Science — reward the ability to construct and defend an argument, not simply recall facts. Our Upper Primary lessons are built around structured discussion of question types, marking criteria, and common errors. Children learn precisely why one answer earns full marks and a near-identical answer does not. That analytical literacy is a skill, and like all skills, it requires repeated, deliberate practice to become reliable.

MASTER

Mastery at Upper Primary means zero gaps entering the PSLE. Our systematic topic-by-topic progression ensures every concept is genuinely consolidated before the next is introduced. At P5 and P6, mastery also means connecting concepts across topics — so that a child can approach a multi-step word problem that combines ratio, percentage, and speed without losing their footing. When the examination arrives, revision is confirmation, not catching up.

Why the second attempt matters. Most tuition lessons end after the explanation. At YPS, every lesson includes a second attempt — a parallel question under the same conditions. This is where understanding becomes performance. A child who can answer after being taught something is not the same as a child who can answer after being tested on it.

No separate programme needed

PSLE preparation at YPS is not a revision sprint that starts in P6. It is a systematic process that begins at P4 — building conceptual foundations — and intensifies through P5 and P6 as examination techniques, time management, and marking literacy become the focus.

We do not offer PSLE preparation as a separate add-on because separation is the problem. Children who receive "content tuition" in one place and "exam skills" in another develop a fragmented understanding. At YPS, every lesson is both — the content and the exam skill are built together, from P4 onwards.

  • P4: Conceptual foundations consolidated across all three subjects. No rushed topics.

  • P5: Examination techniques introduced. Timed conditions from the start of the year. Every new concept taught with its PSLE question type in view.

  • P6: Full PSLE readiness. Topic consolidation, mock-exam practice, and metacognitive review — so that revision is confirmation, not panic.

Foundations before pace

P4 introduces Science and significantly expands the Mathematics syllabus. Children who rush through P4 content carry gaps into P5 that compound under examination pressure. We take P4 seriously — it is the year that determines the ceiling for P6.

The hardest year in primary school

P5 is where the PSLE syllabus is largely introduced — and where most children first experience real academic pressure across three subjects simultaneously. Our P5 programme is specifically designed for this load: timed, cross-subject, and precise about where the gaps are.

The P6 year

Performance, not preparation

By P6, a YPS child should be consolidating, not learning. Lessons shift toward exam simulation, error analysis, and the metacognitive habits — checking answers, managing time, staying calm — that determine performance on the day.

The PSLE Achievement Level system was designed to reduce the stakes of a single number. What it cannot reduce is the underlying competency gap. SEARCH is how YPS closes that gap — not by chasing grades, but by building the learner.

The P4 child starting fresh
P4 is the ideal entry point for Upper Primary. Science begins, Mathematics expands, and the PSLE is three years away — enough time to build properly rather than reactively. Children who join at P4 arrive at P6 without the gaps that late starters spend the final year trying to close.
The P5 child who needs to close gaps now
If your child is finding P5 harder than expected — across any of the three subjects — our structured diagnostic approach identifies where the foundation is shaky and rebuilds from that point. P5 is the last year to close gaps before the PSLE year. We treat it with that urgency.
The P6 child preparing for PSLE
For P6 children, every lesson is a PSLE lesson. Timed conditions, marking criteria, error analysis — and the metacognitive habits that determine performance when the pressure is real. Children who join in P6 benefit most when they already have solid foundations. If gaps remain, we address them directly and quickly.
The child already at YPS from Lower Primary
Children who continue from our P1–P3 programme enter Upper Primary with a significant advantage — established learning habits, a methodology they already know, and mentors who already know them. The transition from Try · Discuss · Master at P3 to the PSLE-ready version at P4 is a natural progression, not a new start.
A note on class size. Our community classrooms run at approximately 20 students. At Upper Primary, this matters for a specific reason — the discussion phase of every lesson works because there are enough peers to surface different approaches, different errors, and different ways of reaching the same answer. A child who hears five wrong approaches to a problem understands why the right approach works. That understanding is what holds under examination pressure.
